BennuGD: A free, open and multiplatform alternative for 2D games development.

Today, a BennuGD forum user wrote a letter for sending it to some spanish media and to promote this 2D game development language. We’re posting here the translation because we thought it would be great if more people can get to know the language we’re using to make our games.

Recently, GameMaker creators have released a free basic version of their powerful game making environment. News have traveled around the world in matter of minutes, and many people rushed in to download a copy. It’s really easy to get started, but it has a few drawbacks, honestly.

Do you want to export your game so everyone can try it on Windows or MacOSX?
Well, you’ll have to pay $ 49 for the Studio Standard version.

Do you want to export your game to HTML5, Ubuntu or mobile devices (Android, iOS, Windows Phone)?
That’s great! Just pay $ 499 for the Master Studio version.

If you develop games professionally and also make a living out of it, the price of the Master Studio version is not an issue at all, but if on the other hand you make games only as a hobby, well, it is really expensive!

The reason I’m writing this article is to provide information about a good, nice and cheap alternative, BennuGD –Bennu Games Development–.

BennuGD is a programming language based on DIV Games Studio, it’s also open source (GPL) and totally free. It has a very clear and amiable syntax, based on both Pascal and C, and runs on the following platforms:

  • Windows (98 or higher)
  • Linux (x86/ARM/PPC/…)
  • FreeBSD
  • Mac OS X
  • iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)
  • Android (=> 2.2)
  • OUYA
  • Haiku
  • GP2X Wiz
  • Caanoo
  • XBox
  • Wii
  • GP2X
  • Dreamcast
  • Playstation 2
  • PSP

It’s also fully modular, and since we’re talking about free software, anyone can contribute to the project by adding features or improvements. In fact, it’s even possible to remove the 2D rendering layer, put a custom 3D one, and use BennuGD to create your very own 3D FPS!

These are some of games that have been published so far:

Nuts and Scrap –

Monkey VS Robots –

La Pesadilla de Ripollés –

PiX Bros –

Masteries Runners (PS2) –

Streets of Rage Remake (Cancelled by Sega) –

If you are interested, please visit BennuGD official websiteThough, most part of the information can really be found on its forums.
